Swine Flu and the Pandemic Alert

October 2, 2009

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have made it official, the Swine Flu is officially a concern. According to the World Health Organization we are at a phase 5 worldwide pandemic alert.

This flu is of the type A/H1N1, which is the type that is spread via coughing or sneezing, spreading airborne droplets of liquid. Is it contagious? Yes, most definitely, as is any other strain of influenza.

You may be thinking that the swine flu risk can be avoided by simply cutting pork out of your diet. This is not the case. While you can contract the swine flu from a sick live pig you will not get this virus from properly cooked pork meat.

What is the best way to avoid contracting swine flu? Great question! Proper hygiene is always a good course of action. Wash your hands often, toss those used tissues, and cover when you sneeze or cough. If you are a caretaker of someone with the flu you may want to use a basic mask as a precaution. But lets get realistic. Airborne viruses are tough to beat.

How do you tell if you have swine flu? The symptoms are just like any other flu, with headache, fatigue, runny nose, cough, aching, and high fever. Call your doctor if you have these symptoms and are concerned about swine flu. Usually the flu is of more danger to the very young and very old, but in this case all ages are susceptible.

As far as a vaccine goes, it does take at least six months to research and develop a new vaccine. Each strain of the flu is different, and vaccines are only good for a single strain. Vaccines are full of mercury — a deadly heavy metal.

Will there be pandemic outbreaks of the swine flu? There have been multiple cases and many deaths, and the outbreaks in the U.S. have risen and spread. Many cases appear to be connected with visits to Mexico, though the Mexican government denies responsibility for the onset.

What can we do, as individuals, to protect ourselves and our families from the viral outbreak of the H1N1 swine flu? Eating a healthy diet may seem like a solution, but building our immune system takes time, too long to avoid this seasons outbreak. Instead we can turn to other measures, directing our focus on diminishing the power of the virus before it takes hold, or using anti-virus foods and supplements to fight any virus that may have already entered the body.
